Autumn Conference
13/14th September 2010
E-Futures students engaging in interdisciplinary energy related research across 16 departments of the University of Sheffield, along with staff, guest speakers and invited guests, discussed and presented on challenges to a sustainable energy future. Students presented on a variety of subjects, such as biomass as an alternative feedstock in the steel making industry, to advances in third generation photovoltaics.
Guest speakers also presented on some of the challenges industry face and possible solutions:

- Powering a Low Carbon Future, Prof. Allan Jones, UK Director, EON New Build & Technology (right)
- Energy from the Sea: The prospects of meeting our energy needs by exploiting Waves and Tidal Currents, Prof. Ian Bryden, Energy Systems Research Institute, University of Edinburgh
- Energy Challenges and the ETI, Mr. Chris Stuart, Corporate Development Director, Energy Technologies Institute
- Peak Oil, Climate Change and the World Beyond Oil, David Strahan, Journalist and Author of 'The Last Oil Shock' (below)
The first day ended with students debating the proposition "Can the UK meet its energy needs from renewable energy", with the audience tending towards the belief that a mixture of sources, including fossil and nuclear, was the more viable option. On the second day, the result of the student led Carbon Challenge was announced, and prizes of £150, £100 and £50, sponsored by Doosan Babcock, were given to the three students who demonstrated the lowest carbon footprint over the course of the previous 10 months.
